Seven types of collagen, seven papers
Applications in cancer research
From coculture with cancer-associated fibroblasts to orthotopic transplantation models of patient-derived cancer
Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), which constitute the cellular component of the tumor microenvironment, show a high correlation with the onset of cancer and are garnering much attention in current research. As CAFs are known to remodel the extracellular matrix within the cancer microenvironment, cancer research and collagen are inseparable.
Here, we present, with accompanying illustrations, examples of how seven types of collagen products were used for the ex vivo culture of patient-derived cancer tissues and the administration of dsRNAi with antitumor effects to orthotopic transplant models.

PDAC and CAF progenitor cells were cocultured in a gel made from a native collagen (I-AC) solution to evaluate CAF differentiation. After coculture, the gel was subcutaneously implanted into mice to evaluate its tumor-forming ability.

Vascular endothelial cells were seeded on the bottom side of a permeable collagen membrane, and osteosarcoma cell spheroids were seeded on the upper surface and cocultured. The effect of the pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) on the vascular extravasation was evaluated.
