Is bovine dermis-derived atelocollagen safe in terms of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)?
We believe it is safe for the following reasons:
– WHO has reported that there is no risk of BSE infection from bovine hide*1.
– Bovine hide-derived collagen is excluded from regulations of BSE risk countries*2.
– The bovine dermis we use for producing atelocollagen comes from Australia, where BSE has never been reported. Since the 1980s, Australia has banned the import of beef products from countries reporting BSE, including the UK, and, from the 1990s, the feeding of meat and bone meal to ruminants. Australia has set up the strictest BSE monitoring system and is regarded as one of the safest countries with regard to BSE.

*2: General provision of animal-derived materials, the standard for biological materials
